Rules and Eligibility

I.  ELIGIBILITY
              A.           The author(s) must be regularly enrolled student(s) (undergraduate or graduate) at UCLA during the entire Winter 2017 and Spring 2017 quarters.  In addition, the writing awards are open to students who graduated in December 2016 or March 2017, provided that they were enrolled in the prior two standard academic quarters (i.e., Spring 2016, Fall 2016, etc.).  University Extension students or students on leave of absence are not eligible.

              B.           Only full-length dramatic writing in script form is eligible--equivalent of a feature length screenplay, three-act stage play, or a one hour (minimum) teleplay.  Each student is limited to a maximum of three (3) submissions.

              C.           All submissions must be the original writing of the contestant(s).  Collaborations are acceptable if all the collaborators are qualified to enter the competition under the rules outlined above.

              D.           The following are not eligible:  adaptations; works commercially produced or under contract for commercial production; works based on existing or continuing series, films or properties.

II.  FORMAT FOR SUBMISSION
              A.           Each manuscript may be submitted either:  online in PDF format at the website shown below; or in traditional format for its medium, printed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, and bound in a cover which is labeled on the front with the title and the author's name.

              B.           Scripts must be accompanied by the following information: your full name, permanent address, telephone number, email, the name of your campus, your major, student number, and status (undergraduate or graduate).  Please include official verification of enrollment for the Winter 2017 and Spring 2017 quarters.  Or if you graduated in December, 2016 or March, 2017, please submit verification of enrollment for the prior two quarters before you graduated.  Scripts not directly submitted to the School of Theater, Film and Television, UCLA, (online or by mail) will not be included in the competition.

              C.           It is highly recommended that pilot teleplays be accompanied by a 1-3 page “bible” outlining the direction of the plot of the ensuing series.

III.  JUDGING
              A.           A panel of industry professionals will read the submissions.  Final judging will be done by a panel composed of prominent industry figures.  Should the judges consider no entry in a given year worthy of the awards, they may, at their discretion, make no award.  The awards will be presented by The Samuel Goldwyn Foundation.  Students must retain a copy of their submissions.  Any breach of the above rules and guidelines can result in disqualification from the competition.

              B.           Student scripts WILL NOT be returned.
