Faculty member John Simmons has been nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series category for his work on Disney XD's "Pair of Kings." Simmons also received an Emmy nomination for his work on the show in 2011. "Pair of Kings" follows the lives of teenage twins who become joint kings of an island nation.
Simmons got his start in the industry as a camera assistant for Carlton Moss over 30 years ago and has climbed the ranks to be the DP on many feature films, commercials and television shows. A long-time member of the TFT faculty, he has been a mentor to many students.
Simmons, in an interview with Sound and Picture, on why he enjoys cinematography:
"What makes me want to keep working as a cinematographer is that the experience is always fresh. I’m always in a continuous state of becoming—there’s no arrival—it’s a creative journey with no end. Cinematography is inseparable from all the other arts. It has at its foundation, the very beginning of visual and dramatic tradition. I enjoy being connected to that tradition. My background is photography and painting. I love dramatic structure and cinematography is the marriage of all the arts."
