Scott Brockman Varnado

Scott Brockman Varnado is from Hattiesburg, Miss., and is the youngest son of a civil attorney and a public schoolteacher. He received his B.A. from Wesleyan University, where he studied under Jeanine Basinger, in 2010. During the last decade, he has worked in feature film development and production, most recently as an associate producer of numerous independent films. He has worked under acclaimed directors Lee Daniels and Simon West and alongside producers David Lancaster and Pam Oas Williams. Throughout the ongoing search for relevant and impactful stories, Varnado realized that his ultimate interest lies in the stewardship and curation of less-often-seen American films. Through focusing his graduate study on community-based film programming, he views it as his mission, given his inherent position of privilege, to continue the tradition of using the arts to empower and embolden the next generation of artists, activists and educators.

Films and filmmakers of the American South, programming and curating films in nontraditional screening spaces, audience/reception studies, visual anthropology, ethnographic documentaries
