MFA Actors 2012 reunion -– onstage at LATC

Five 2012 grads appear together in "The Psychic Life of Savages"

Posted on August 6th in Announcement

Five recent TFT acting graduates, all from the MFA class of 2012, are together again through August 16 in the LATC revival of Amy Freed’s “The Psychic Life of Savages.” Anne Butler, Bryan Chesters, Lauren Dunagan, Josephine Keefe and Colin Simon appear, along with Cecilia Fairchild and Walter Gray IV, in this “wickedly funny re-imagining of the lives and deaths of poets Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Ted Hughes, Robert Lowell and Emily Dickinson.” The production was sponsored partly by a Kickstarter crowdsourcing campaign organized by Keefe.

The play's title echos Sigmund Freud's 1918 classic "Totem and Taboo: Resemblances Between the Psychic Lives of Savages and Neurotics." The characters, wrote one critic, speak in verse even in moments of crisis, which "frees the playwright to write virtually all of the dialogue of her play in the clotted and gnarled diction of modern poetry that brilliantly parodies her various models. And it liberates her to depict the mundane world of college classrooms, birthday parties, bedrooms and kitchens as a world supercharged with attitude, and with words and words and words."
