43rd Telluride Film Festival
UCLA TFT students make their annual pilgrimage to the fest; alumni are well represented
The Telluride Film Festival announced its lineup on Thursday, Sept. 1, one day before the 43rd edition of the fest began in Telluride, Colorado. Five alumni and two executive board members have ties to films at the festival this year: Michael Stuhlbarg is an actor in Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, for which Mary Lukasiewicz (B.A. ’10) served as first assistant editor; executive board member Martin Scorsese is an executive producer of Bleed for This; Sarah Schuessler (M.F.A. ’10) was an additional set costumer on Damien Chazelle’s La La Land; and Executive Board member Frank Marshall (B.A. ’68), who sits on Telluride’s Esteemed Council of Advisors, served as a producer on Clint Eastwood’s Sully. Also working on Sully were actress Autumn Reeser (’04), and costume assistant Ani Babayan (B.A. ’13).
Additionally, Alexander Payne (M.F.A. '90) sits on the Telluride Film Festival Board of Governors while Marshall is a founding sponsor of FilmLab, a multi-faceted program at the Telluride Film Festival focused on the art and industry of filmmaking, created by Dean Teri Schwartz and festival co-director Julie Huntsinger in 2010. This year’s group of 11 invited UCLA TFT FilmLab fellows, graduate students from the Department of Film, Television and Digital Media, include the following: From the Directing program: Jessica Fuh, Chelsi Johnston, Kelly Pike and Jerell Rosales; from the Screenwriting program: Rishi Chitkara, Elias Elbogen and Jeff Scott Gordon; from the Producers program: Helga Bryndis and Linda Riedmann; from the Animation program: Daniel Luis Olivas; and from the Cinema and Media Studies program, Clara Baker.
