'The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez' at TFT
 
Join us on Wednesday, April 26 for a free screening of The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982), produced by TFT alumnus Moctesuma Esparza (BA ’71, MFA ’73), as we celebrate the film's induction into the National Film Registry. A fireside chat with Esparza follows the screening in TFT's James Bridges Theater.

Black Dress and Culture Series

 
On Saturday, April 22, the second installment of Black Dress & Culture will explore the critical topic of the representation of Black Dress in fashion and popular culture.  Hosted by UCLA’s David C. Copley Center for Costume Design and the Department of African American Studies, the 2023 colloquium will examine the contributions of current Black fashion designers and stylists in Los Angeles, in conversation with scholars to discuss the role of Los Angeles as a fashion city and their individual creative approaches and challenges as practitioners.

SXSW Recap: Lewis A. Colick (MFA ’76) is the screenwriter of Flamin’ Hot, directed by Eva Longoria, which was the winner of the Headliners section; Jocko Sims (BA ’04) is the showrunner, director and screenwriter of Grown , the Independent TV Pilot Competition winner. Miranda Yousef (MFA ’07) was the editor of the Audience Award-winning film No Ordinary Campaign.

Oscar Fabela (MFA ’18), the newest resident artist/actor at PCPA Pacific Conservatory Theatre, will appear in American Mariachi at the Solvang Festival Theater.

Graduate cinematography student Sonia Gonzalez is the recipient of the highly competitive Carole Fielding Grant, awarded to film students by the University Film and Video Association (UFVA).

Theater Adjunct Professor Linda Kerns is performing in The Actors Co-op production of Tornado, a new play by Chris Cragin-Day opening April 21.

The Myth of the Mountain, a new musical with books and lyrics by Danielle Koenig (BA ’20) and music by Justin D. Cook, recently had a staged reading at Syracuse University, as part of the university’s New Works, New Voices initiative.

Lea Madda (MFA ’17) is performing in Robert Askin's Hand to God at Coachella Valley Repertory.

Musical Theater alumna Paravi (BA ’22) is headlining her first show at The Moroccan Lounge in L.A. on April 6.

Ulato Sam (MFA ’19) and Kay Sibal (BA ’22) are appearing in The Tempest: An Immersive Experience at Shakespeare Center LA, though April 16.

Graduate student Kap Taylor has been awarded The Kennedy Center's Harold & Mimi Steiner National Playwriting Award for the play 11:38 from Fond du Lac, which was produced at TFT in Spring 2022.

'Data' Winners
 
UCLA professors Jeff Burke and Lixia Zhang have been awarded a $20,000 from the Omidyar Network. The grant, presented at South by Southwest, is part of the inaugural Future of Data Challenge. Read more

Theater and Performance Studies News
 
Carla Neuss (Ph.D. ’21), who was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University from 2021-2023, will be an assistant professor at Baylor University beginning in Fall 2023. 

Ph.D. student Clara Wilch has received a postdoctoral fellowship at the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University for the 2023-24 academic year.

Long Beach Opera

 
Long Beach Opera Artistic Director James Darrah (MFA ’10) directed the world premiere of composer Kate Soper's opera The Romance of the Rose with production design by Prairie T. Trivuth (MFA ’22), assisted by current MFA design student  Rye Mandell; lighting design by Pablo Santiago (MFA ’13), assisted by Benedict Conran (MFA ’23); and costume design by Molly Irelan (MFA ’16). UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music student Tivoli Treloar (BM ’23) is a cast member, and current MFA design student Katherine Jelte designed season materials and marketing graphics.
