Spotlight on Costume Design
The robust costume design program at UCLA TFT, led and curated by professors Chrisi Karvonides and Deborah Nadoolman Landis, provides students with dynamic educational offerings and unique opportunities. It's also producing what promises to be the next generation of A-list designers in Hollywood and beyond.
Before he made the “flippy, trippy” documentary Mondo Hollywood, UCLA alumnus Robert Carl Cohen spent time during the first decade of the Cold War filming as an NBC News special correspondent in China and as an independent documentary producer in both East Germany and Cuba. A two-day Archive retrospective on Cohen’s work begins Friday, Dec. 9.

Long Beach Opera, led by artistic director James Darrah (MFA ’10), has been listed as one of the Top 10 in the Los Angeles Times’ recently published “Best Classical of 2022” list. Singled out for their excellence were LBO’s productions of Giustino, directed by Darrah, designed by Adam Rigg (BA ’09) with video by Michael Thomas(MFA ’18); and The Central Park Five, directed by Professor J.Ed Araiza withcostumes by Molly Irelan (MFA ’16). Lecturer Pablo Santiago(MFA ’13) created the lighting design for both productions.
